Back in October at FP 2023, a hoodie I found in my room never made it back to its owner, and the only thing I recall doing as means of getting it back to them was posting it in one of my chat groups. Months later, someone identified it and questioned me on its whereabouts. My attitude towards them that night was inappropriately defensive and, worse, dismissive, and for that I’m truly sorry to them and anyone else who watched me make a real jerk of myself.
As for why this needs to be posted here...
Conventions are a sacred space, and the trust shared between attendees is a pillar of our community’s values. By not being mindful and treating someone’s unattended property with respect by taking proper action to get it back to them or, at the very least, hold onto it until I see them next, I had violated that pillar. And so, to everyone who attends this convention and leans on that trust: I am truly sorry to you as well. To anyone as oblivious as I was to this pillar of trust: know that it is there and, unlike what I did, treat it (and other people’s property) with the respect it deserves. It’s part of what holds us together so we can all have a good time without worrying about our stuff.
